Train the Trainers

Trainee, Full-time · Bangkok

Background & Purpose
Capacity building and cooperation are essential for advancing the energy transition in a sustainable and equitable manner. Civil society organizations, research institutions, and think tanks play pivotal roles by providing science-based evidence, proposing policy solutions, and generating inclusive policy dialogues. Effectively sharing knowledge, experiences, and skills across the spectrum of energy transition actors is crucial for accelerating change. It allows us to pool our expertise, find innovative solutions, and overcome obstacles more efficiently.

With knowledge sharing having become a key mission for most actors in this space, it is important for topical experts to develop a robust background in didactics and training design and to be equipped with a toolbox of methods and approaches to training formats that go beyond merely presenting information. By incorporating dynamic, participatory and engaging learning formats, recipients are ensured to gain actionable learnings. Interactive knowledge sharing formats are highly effective in motivating participants to leave with specific ideas, plans, and actions, fostering the development of more impactful and empowering learning experiences.

The Train the Trainer program aims to flip the perspective with which training design is approached. Instead of starting from what knowledge could be shared, participants will learn to shift their focus towards intended learning outcomes and the specific needs of their target group. Such a demand driven approach can improve the impact of any knowledge sharing activity and ensures that key messages and skills are absorbed. This is as important for sharing knowledge with allies, as with convincing policy makers.

Drawing on our extensive experience in implementing energy transition trainings and workshops, Agora will host a 3-day program focused on equipping trainers with the tools, methods, and best practice examples that allow them to develop, implement, and review their own knowledge sharing and learning formats. After completing the training, participants will be able to enhance any training or knowledge sharing within their networks by using learning-focused tools and methods to guarantee success.

Training Objectives & Methods
Participants completing the training will be equipped to design and develop their own robust, interactive learning offers for CSOs on any climate and energy-related topic. Specifically, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the specific needs and characteristics of their target groups and develop concise, targeted learning objectives that ensure participants of their trainings leave with their knowledge gaps filled and practical skills acquired.
  2. Identify, select and apply interactive learning tools and approaches for their own training offers to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among participants by creating learning environments that encourage dialogue, exchange of ideas, and collective learning.
  3. Brainstorm, develop, and review plans, resources, and content for exemplary learning formats of their choice (session, webinar, event, workshop, training) for CSOs on climate and energy-related topics, ensuring they are practical, engaging and aligned with the intended learning outcomes.
  4. Apply improved instructional and facilitation skills using a variety of tools, methods, exercises, visual aids, and interactive activities to create dynamic and participatory learning environments that maximize learner engagement and retention.
Methods
Active learning, or ‘learning-by-doing’ is one of the core principles of Agora's trainings. In this vein, the Train-the-Trainer program includes laboratory workshops: group work sessions where participants design their own knowledge sharing formats using the learning-focused tools and methods described above. These laboratory workshops will benefit from guidance provided by Agora content and training experts. Participants will leave the training with the foundations for developing training and learning formats as well as a basic structure for their own learning format.
The training programme is designed to be a mixture between theoretical input, hands-on exercises, group work and inclusive discussions that encourage participants to identify best practices from their own work context. We strive to create a healthy and safe, informal learning environment, where collaboration is encouraged and where mistakes are celebrated as part of the learning process.

About us
Informed specialists play a crucial role in tackling global climate issues and shaping the energy systems of tomorrow. Although energy policy primarily falls within the realm of national policy, national energy transformations share several commonalities, including international climate obligations, low-carbon technologies, traded energy resources, effective regulatory principles, and market structure.
To foster international expertise and knowledge transfer as well as strengthen the policy, communications, and technical skills of energy transition professionals around the globe, Agora Energiewende offers a range of training formats in both in-person and virtual settings. The training programmes, developed by Agora experts in cooperation with our partners, are particularly aimed at energy transition policy experts employed by or affiliated with think tanks or other non-governmental organisations. Experts from civil society organisations and/or academic bodies researching energy policy or other relevant fields fall into the wider target group.
